I don't dislike Julie. "Wake Up Older" is one of my favorite recent singles, actually. I just think she's overrated. Live performance skills are still developing and she can't pull off uptempo material convincingly, to my ears at least. I like her voice but I don't always buy that she's feeling the material, good as it often is. I think it's a product of how young she is.

I guess what it comes down to is what Julie does best - slower, melancholy material - is already done much better by Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, Wynonna, Pam Tillis, etc. You've probably noticed already that I'm a big supporter of the female artists of the early-mid 90's, so I'm biased in that regard. I think she has potential, and I have both of her albums, but she hasn't hooked me yet. Then again, I didn't really fall for the Chicks until "Home", so maybe I'll come around later.

I forgot "Kerosene" last year, so I cheated a bit and made a note to include it on the 2006 list, since it was still climbing the charts in early 2006. I did the same thing with Sara Evans' "Tonight", which was technically released in 2004 but I forgot it, and put it on the 2005 list.

I like that Pinmonkey single, but prefer Matraca Berg's original version.

Kevin,

For as many things as it seems that we do agree on, I don't get your issue with Julie Roberts. At all. She doesn't have a huge vocal range, but I think she *more* than makes up for that with her interpretive skills-- girl minds her phrasing better than any major label newcomer in the last five years-- and by picking interesting, meaty material to sing.

I haven't finalized a country singles list at this point, but, offhand, I'd consider:
- "Coalmine," Sara Evans
- "Life Ain't Always Beautiful," Gary Allan
- "Down Home Girl," Old Crow Medicine Show
- "Low Down," Hank III
- "Radio Operator," Rosanne Cash
- "Men & Mascara," Julie Roberts
- "Aftermath, USA," Drive-By Truckers
- "Bring It on Home," Little Big Town
- "Down in Mississippi (Up to No Good)," Sugarland
- "Gay Cowboy," Jude
- "That River's Gonna Run," Sam Bush & Emmylou Harris
- "Rise Up with Fists!!!," Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins
- "God's Gonna Cut You Down," Johnny Cash
- "Like Red on a Rose," Alan Jackson
- "New Strings," Miranda Lambert (I thought "Kerosene" shipped to radio last August...)
- "That Train Don't Run," Pinmonkey
- "Star Witness," Neko Case

As always, this was a great read, and there are a few picks here that I need to check out.

2) One Second Chance - Jeff Bates
3) The World - Brad Paisley
4) 8th of November - Big & Rich
