George Strait, “How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls”

George Strait has a knack for finding interesting songs that take surprising twists.   His delivery is so casual and unassuming that the lyrics sneak up on you.  I was ready to write this off as trite “cowgirls are hot” radio filler after the first verse, but he ends up fully humanizing the women he’s only gawking at in the beginning.    The virtues he spends most of the song praising have little to do with physical beauty, and there’s a quiet feminism that surfaces in both the  lyric and his delivery of it.

  1. This is classic George Strait. A song like this can only be sung by someone with the “depth of character” thaat Geoge possesses. His “Fifty Number Ones” is getting a lot more company.

  2. Boy ..he has done it again..i love George Strait..He is Pure country..and really knows how to deliver a song..how bout them cowgirls is a real WINNER.

  3. I love this song!! It kind of reminds me of Amarillo By Morning…..not the sound but just something about it! Amarillo is my favorite Strait song and this one is getting close!! Genres do not matter to me. I love all music. A good song is a good song no matter the genre!

  4. Agree with everyone on this list: NO ONE delivers a song like George. My favorite all-time George Strait hit is “Amarillo by Morning” too. But I love every song that he sings and am hoping that “Wrapped” wins Single of the Year at the CMAs.

  5. I don’t understand how the reviewer first thought the song was about cowgirls being hot. I knew from the beginning that it was about much more. I agree with George, but to me it is about all women.

  6. I loved this song right from the start. It’s not at all about the “hotness” of cowgirls. in my opinion. It is about their character and strength!

  7. I love this song. I agree it does remind me of “Amarillo by Morning”. I love George and all his music. When I first got the CD “it Just Comes Natrual” I thought that Cowgirls would be a great single.

  8. George STRAIT DEMONSTRATES THE DIGNITY AND GENTLENESS OF ALMOST ALL COWBOYS… I KNOW SOMEONE LIKE HIM THAT I HAVE TRIED TO REKINDLE A TRUE RELATIONSHIP WITH ; WHERE I’M CLUELESS AS TO WHAT TO SAY TO DESCRIBE MYSELF AFTER 33 YEARS, GEORGE SURE KNOWS THE RIGHT WORDS. HE IS A MAN OF HEART,JUST LIKE MY FRIEND.

  9. I hate to disagree with everyone, because I love George Strait, but this song doesn’t do anything for me. The lyrics may be interesting, but I can’t get into the melody…too mundane, I think. I was much more into Give It Away, Wrapped and It Just Comes Natural. I’m a bigger fan of his music from the 90s and 80s, so it is cool to see that the It Just Comes Natural CD has regained my enthusiasm for George.
