I gave it 3 1/2 stars. The material is excellent, of course, but it’s mostly a rehash of Songbook. Ideally, MCA will release a “Definitive Collection” for Trisha, or even better, a 2-Disc “Gold” set. She has way too much good stuff to just be lazy and slap the biggest chart hits on a CD.

Outside of the Porter Wagoner set, however, all of this material has been generally available. Therefore, none except the Wagoner set are essential. Better candidates include :

The Essential Charlie Rich (Sony Legacy – two CDs)
Hal Lone Pine & Betty Cody – ON THE TRAIL OF LONESOME (Bear)
Rose Maddox & The Vern Williams Band – A BEAUTIFUL BOUQUET (Arhoolie)
Chet Atkins & Les Paul – CHESTER & LESTER (Sony-BMG Legacy)
Ray Price – THE ESSENTIAL RAY PRICE (Sony-BMG Legacy)
Bobby Bare – SINGS LULLABYS, LEGENDS AND LIES (Sony-BMG Legacy)

There were also some fine reissues of albums by Guy Clark and Emmylou Harris .

My top pick woiuld be the Bobby Bare set, an expanded CD containing most of Bare’s recordings of songs written by Shel Silverstein – easily worth six stars on a five star scale
