Thank you Blake for writing another outstanding review. I think you pretty much covered all the bases of this amazing album in a very eloquent manner. Excellent work!

JC, in addition to the recording of PRETTY POLLY that Blake mentioned, that amazing duet is also available in live form on the ALL STAR BLUEGRASS CELEBRATION Cd (available on DVD as well)..Patty holds the "KNELT" note long enough to bring down the rafters of the Ryman!

Also, check out the YouTube live performance of PRETTY POLLY posted by "essentiallypatty"...Dr. Stanley and Patty perform live on Mountain Stage, I believe. Once again Patty holds that note long, loud and crystal clear, never missing a beat in spite of Ralph Stanley's attempts to distract her, lol..this video has to be seen to be believed.

Mountain Soul is one of my all time favorite albums, and is certainly one of Patty's masterpieces. (I would also include ON YOUR WAY HOME and DREAMIN' MY DREAMS, as well as her incredible BLUE GRASS AND WHITE SNOW Christmas album in the masterpiece category.) Patty's blend of Bluegrass with Traditonal Country, acoustic and electric (OYWH and DMD) is truly unique and I believe will be regarded historically as stylistically significant and influential.

I am also betting that Patty's upcoming album SLEEPLESS NIGHTS will be another worthy addition to this amazing string of 21st century gems. I believe that SLEEPLESS NIGHTS will be to classic Country, what MOUNTAIN SOUL is to Bluegrass. Like two soulful and perfectly complementary bookends. Patty Loveless is truly the "Queen of Mountain Soul"!

Patty definitely found her niche, hit her stride... or whatever cliche one can come up... on this one.

This is probably one of the best country albums of the last maybe 20 years, it isn't however my favorite of her's, which says something about her talent.

P.S. My favorite is When Fallen Angels Fly
