I suspect Brenda Lee’s version would have been huge had she released it while her career was red-hot, instead of during the lull between the red-hot pop years and the time her country career (briefly) reached high gear in 1973 & 1974

As a kid, I couldn’t understand why people liked him so dang much. I hated that trill and nasal in his voice back then. This song lacked much of that, so I embraced it. Of course, I love Willie now and am a bit horrified by my youthful judgment of him.:)

It’s tough to dismiss the King’s original–at least it is for me, and I won’t even bother trying. But I will say that Willie’s version was a special one, where he put his own interpretive stamp on it while paying tribute to Elvis at the same time.
