Discussion: New Year’s Resolutioning

new_years_toastIs the art of the New Year’s resolution still alive and well? Do these January 1 dreams ever come true? Questions that I won’t answer for you, but I know that quite many CU readers would like to see a few positive changes not just for themselves, but in country music as well. As we ring in the new year, we are giving you an SAT-like riddle to solve. No wrong answers this time! Tell us how you would like your favorite (or least favorite, but be nice) country music artist to progress in 2009. Happy New Year!

Fill in the blanks: _____ should resolve to __________________.

  1. I thought of a few:

Reba should resolve to make her Valory debut as good as Trisha Yearwood’s Big Machine debut, or better of course, if possible.

Martina McBride should resolve to go back to sad country songs on her album, hopefully with less screaming.

Jo Dee Messina should resolve to not give up on her album that needs to be released, maybe Curb will finally release it.

  2. I would like to see Sara Evans resolve to return to her roots in a big way. Great things, artistic things, would follow!

And Chris, I agree, I hope Jo Dee will hang in there, and not give up…some of these labels nowadays, I just shake my head.

Katrina Elam too, I hope she resolves to find a new label, because Universal South did her wrong, IMO.

  3. Chris, I second that about Martina!

Sara Evans should resolve to release a great hit this year! I’d like to see her back on top, and on the charts!

  4. How about Garth Brooks should resolve to release an all-new record and tour behind it?

real world ones? Radio would resolve to play more artists, focus groups be damned?

Oh wait, you want real world ones?

LeAnn resolves to score another Top 10 hit.

  5. Alan Jackson should resolve to go down memory lane as often as he can as a songwriter. When he does, we get classics: “Home”, “Chasin that Neon Rainbow”, “Drive”, “Small Town Southern Man”, etc.

Trace Adkins should resolve to stick with ballads. Some singers are just natural balladeers…”Youre Gonna Miss This”, “Then tHey Do”, “The Rest Of Mine”, etc

Radio should resolve to play the Dixie Chicks again, if they arent already. At least compromise. If you feel strongly about it, then jus dont play new music by them. But play the songs that already were hits…”Travelin Soldier”, Long Time Gone”, “Wide Open Spaces”, etc.

  6. Chuck Wicks should resolve to quit.

Rascal Flatts should resolve to put some real musical hooks back in their music. I at least had a guilty appreciation for their first couple of records.

Tim McGraw should resolve to exercise the muscle of his starpower and take better control of his career.

  7. Carrie Underwood should resolve to put at least three acoustic tracks on her next album (and she should release it by Labor Day).

  8. Music Row should resolve to give us a break with the “blonde girl singer” thing.

CMA Awards should resolve to broaden their list of country artists beyond the usual suspects.

ABC-TV should resolve to chill on coming into Nashville twice a year and thinking they can take over the city and shut down any and all streets (CMA MusicFest & CMA Awards).
I know those yankees think we’re a bunch of yahoos down here but we all know who’s getting the last laugh. ;-)

  9. Carrie Underwood should resolve to release “Flat on the Floor” and “I Told You So” as her next singles, and she should release a stellar album before the year’s over!

Lady Antebellum should resolve to back-up their sucess this year with even more next year…and of course to come back to Arizona!

Julianne Hough should resolve to release a more radio friendly hit (aka “Hello”) in order to jump start her career even more. (By the way, landing a spot on George Strait’s next tour is already a great way to get her musical career started)

Taylor Swift should resolve to actually release a country song to country radio…no more pop crap!

  10. Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson should resolve to release another album together.

Taylor Swift should resolve to release a number of very traditional country and bluegrass songs on compilations or soundtracks, just to keep us all guessing.
