Dan, this is one more original songs about this sort of subject I’ve heard in a long time. It is as if she is singing it thru someone instead of at someone and that is what makes it special. Great review by the way.

Thanks for posting that background info, Gavin. Knowing the context, I’m glad Cia chose not to specify who “the people” the son is fighting for are – even if the guy who inspired it was concerned about his son dying for Iraqis, I think it’s an idea that could apply well to both citizens of other countries we’re involved with and our own citizens, and weighing that point down with specifics would have probably given the song some unnecessary topical baggage. So good taste on her part for keeping it general.

I enjoyed this song as well. It didn’t rub me wrong like many that address the same subject matter. It had a certain poignancy about it that resonated.

The song was inspired by a true story told by Freddie Smith, a WDVX DJ whose son is a marine in Iraq. Freddie could not understand why his only son would volunteer to fight and die for the Iraqi people. He struggled with this and was deeply saddened and troubled until he realized that’s what God’s only son, Jesus, did. He told this story to Cia Holmes at a Bluegrss show in Dollywood. It inspired her to write this song.

I loved this track since I bought the album last year, I think this is their best work to date, and despite the remix with the drums and piano, I’m really curious to see if country radio will play this one. I’m really hoping they do because this song really deserves it.
