Country Quizzin’ – 02/03/09 Edition
February 3, 2009
UPDATE: Well, y’all pretty much kicked my butt this week. I guess it was foolish of me to underestimate your knowledge of 90’s/00’s mainstream singles, since a whopping thirteen of you scored perfectly, and tons more of you trailed behind by only a point or half a point.
Given that figure, I’m going to to hold off on posting rankings until next week, ’cause it’s kind of like…what’s the point, when I’d have to list over half of you?
Of course, there are still three more weeks of super-intense quzzin’ ahead, and we’ve no clear frontrunners yet, so don’t get cocky (or discouraged, depending) just yet!
As always, thanks for playing, and I’ll catch y’all next week! – Dan

Hiya everyone. Since the first month of Country Quizzin’ was a success (thanks!), we will be implementing a monthly prize system from here on out. You are now competing each month for a $20 Amazon gift certificate, which you can naturally use for any sort of purchase from the Amazon store. OK, so maybe it’s not a life-changing freebie for those of us who aren’t college students, but still – pretty neato bonus for just answering a bunch of silly questions, right?
Each month we will choose a winner based on whosoever has achieved that month’s highest cumulative score. In the event of a tie…um, we’ll figure that out when we get there. In order to ensure a diversity of prize winners, all winners will be ineligible from winning again for six months from their time of their victory. You can always keep playing after you win, of course, but the prize will go to the second-place finisher in the event that you win again within the six-month period. Make sense?
Naturally, you’re going to have to play each week if you want a shot at the prize. Remember: never be discouraged if you don’t know a bunch of the answers – just try your best, learn from your mistakes and hope the next week is more in your element!
So that’s settled. Tonight’s rules:
- 12 questions on classic songs which became hits as contemporary covers. Covers have always been at least somewhat prevalent in country music, so I’m narrowing the field this week to singles that were released in the 90s or 2000s. This theme was suggested by commenter Michael, so kudos to him!
- No cheating.
- You have until tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10:00 pm EST to answer.
- Your answer will be invisible to everyone but you until 10:30 pm EST (the extra half-hour is so I have time to grade your responses, so try to avoid late submissions if possible).
- At that time, the comments and answers will be revealed, along with rankings of this week’s top scorers.
Go!
You just have to name the song title for each question. If you can’t remember the title, you can scrounge some half-credit by describing what the song is about.
1. It was a signature song for Dottie West in 1980 and spent 7 weeks at #2 for Jo Dee Messina in 1999. It’s about waiting around for karma to hit your ex in the face.
ANSWER: “Lesson in Leavin’”
2. This silly number was co-written by Roger Miller and George Jones but never released as a single until Alan Jackson brought it to #1 in 1995. It finds its narrator making lots of cute and largely unkeepable promises in return for a woman’s love.
ANSWER: “Tall, Tall Trees”
3. This appraisal of one’s own romantic let-down was a big hit for Bonnie Tyler in 1978 and a moderate one for Trick Pony in 2005.
ANSWER: “It’s a Heartache”
4. 2003 saw Lonestar breathe surprising new life into this oft-covered 1991 one-hit-wonder by Marc Cohn.
ANSWER: “Walking in Memphis”
5. Tim McGraw got his Urban Cowboy on in 2007 with this cover of a 1979 Eddie Rabbitt hit about being all paranoid that someone’s gonna steal your hot girlfriend.
ANSWER: “Suspicions”
6. Brooks & Dunn’s #1 1996 cover of this 1973 pop hit by B.W. Stevenson may actually be the definitive version now, thanks to all of the recurrent airplay it still gets.
ANSWER: “My Maria”
7. This plainspoken promise of devotion by Bob Dylan was actually written not long before its 1998 cover by Garth Brooks, so it technically shouldn’t qualify for this list. Whatever, good song.
ANSWER: “To Make You Feel My Love”
8. This truck-drivin’ anthem was a hit for Dave Dudley back in 1963 and a hit for Sawyer Brown in 1997.
ANSWER: “Six Days on the Road”
9. Conway Twitty and Blake Shelton both went Top-10 with their respective versions of this coming-to-terms-with-the-end power ballad, the former in 1988, the latter in 2005.
ANSWER: “Goodbye Time”
10. Garth Brooks had arguably one of the best hits of his career (in 1994) when he covered this thumping New Grass Revival song (from 1989) about travelling around while you still have someone on your mind (sorry, if I get more specific than that, I’ll give it away).
ANSWER: “Callin’ Baton Rogue”
11. Here’s a gimme: the Dixie Chicks had a 2002 hit with this cover of the famous Stevie Nicks song from 1975 about growing older and wiser and being twenty-seven and stuff.
ANSWER: “Landslide”
12. The second Brooks & Dunn-covered song on our list (this one from 1998) is also the second one written by Roger Miller (who released it in 1966). It’s a beautiful reflection on the nature of collapsing relationships.
ANSWER: “Husbands & Wives”

My new favorite version of “Six Days on the Road” is Aaron Tippin’s from his new Overdrive album. I never really took to the song before.
[...] Another Wednesday, another edition of “Country Quizzin’.” Today’s topic is classic songs that became hits as contemporary covers, and you know, I think it’s the hardest one yet. You’ll also want to note that monthly winners will receive an Amazon gift certificate. [...]

… I love every one of these songs. And they’re all in my library – by one artist or another.
Am I the only one who still sees all the comments as comment hidden?
Sorry CMW, that was my bad – I forgot to turn the comments back on when I updated it. Lame.
Unfortunately I didn’t get to post in this one before the deadline, but I did take it afterward (while covering up the answers) and got all but one (I put “Superstitions” instead of “Suspicions” for #5.) This one was pretty easy :D.
Suggestions:
maybe country songs made for movie soundtracks?
songs that name or feature a legendary country singer in the lyrics?
politically-driven/subject songs?
signature or big fan hit songs (that weren’t big radio hits?)
one about famous producers?
one/two-hit wonders?
rock/pop/hip-hop/etc. country crossovers (either way)?
songs that name or feature a legendary country singer in the lyrics?
Please, no.
Why the strong aversion, J.R.?
Those kinds of songs are usually not my favorites … actually, I tend to despise name-dropping songs. But the rest of CF’s suggestions were really interesting.
How about the name-dropping song that puts all others to shame — Clint Black’s “Tuckered Out”?
I’ve seen more than a Little Texas, and a Playboy always knows
A man does what he Wills as long as he stays on his toes
He can Russell up a fortune, any man could strike it Rich
But I’m doing good to keep it Strait and keep my wheels out of the ditch
Ain’t no Foster for the Desert Rose, the babblin’ Brooks are Dunn
That Crystal ball won’t even book me one day in the Sun
I’m Haggard, worn and Waylon from the bottom of my Restless Heart
Don’t know Wy the Black cloud’s tailin’ me, there seems to be no Parton from the dark
And I’ve had it to the Gills of knowin’ what the Nitty Gritty’s all about
Bein’ McEntired and Loveless I can’t Lovett if I’m all Tuckered out
Well, I never meant to set out like a half-cocked Gatlin gun
No highway Head Hunter’s gonna let this Rabbitt run
I ain’t Raven ’bout The Ride, I probably got no fate to Seal
If I can’t roll through Alabama half Asleepin’ At The Wheel
All my Paycheckes are like dried up Wells and way too small to Cash
Or I’d find a roadside motel, lay some money down to Crash
I’m Haggard, worn and Waylon from the bottom of my Restless Heart
Don’t know Wy the Black cloud’s tailin’ me, there seems to be no Parton from the dark
And I’ve had it to the Gills of knowin’ what the Nitty Gritty’s all about
Bein’ McEntired and Loveless I can’t Lovett if I’m all Tuckered out
THAT is the way to write a name-dropping song. All or nothing. I like it.
But there is actually some good “name-dropping” songs lol. One song that immediately came to mind is Lee Ann Womack’s “I Think I Know” and Ashley Monroe’s “Hank’s Cadillac”, etc. Those two probably wouldn’t be on any quiz since they’re not known by a whole lot of people, for the most part (some good ones that are well known even could be like Trisha mentioning Patsy and Aretha in “XXX’s and OOO’s”). But they are some good ones, and plenty of bad ones as we know (“Johnny Cash”, “Kristofferson”, “Tim McGraw”, and I guess for some people, Alan Jackson mentioning Brooks & Dunn in “Good Time”).
It can get creative. I mean, the quiz rules don’t say we have to like the songs. Just that we know about them. I think it would be fun.
And yes, Clint outdid everybody with that one haha.
(O.K., I just realized I put Aretha, McGraw, and B&D in there, even though I put “legendary country singer”, but it doesn’t have to limit itself to that category. Anyway, just had to clear that up. I forgot I used those specific words lol).
I don’t like all name checking songs, but there are plenty that I enjoy. It just depends on how they’re executed.
