Country Quizzin’ – March ‘09, Week 3
March 18, 2009
UPDATED
I think this week was lame, and that’s my fault, so I’ve decided to downsize the number of points these answers are worth in the long-run. Basically, I’m shrinking this week’s points total from 25 to 10, and your scores, in turn, reflect a proportional shift from your totals out of 25. If you have any questions or think I’ve flubbed something, definitely let me know!
This week’s Top 3:
10/10 – pselby (/crazy over-achiever!), Occasional Hope, Michael, JoeB, J.R. Journey, Music Man, Mike M.
9/10 – Jordan Stacey
8/10 – Joseph
Top 3 for the month of March (so far):
37/42 – Jordan Stacey
36.5/42 – pselby
32.5/42 – Occasional Hope, Michael
I’ll have to make it up to y’all next week. Until then, have a good one! – Dan

Happy post-Patty’s Day, y’all, and welcome to the revamped Country Universe!
The Pop-Opry (pOpry?) extravaganza of this week’s American Idol has me thinking back on country music’s many crossover stories – the good, the bad, the Gone Country. So naturally, this week’s theme is Genre-hoppers.
But there’s a twist! In the spirit of laziness spurred by my pressing need to study for a Finance exam reinvention modeled by our new site design, this week’s quiz will be open-form. Essentially, I’m going to give you a single prompt, and it’s going to be up to you to jog your brains to respond to it as extensively as you can!
We’ll see how it works and whether it pleases. If you hate it, feel free to say so in your comment (no hard feelings), and I’ll consider making this week count for less.
As always, no cheating, and you have until 10 pm EST. The answers and rankings will be revealed at 10:30, as usual.
Let’s go!
For each number, please provide a) The name of an artist who, during his/her/their career, achieved notable success by crossing over to or from country music, and b) The name of one song with which that artist achieved crossover success.
Please note that you may score an additional half-point for an especially impressive answer, or, as always, for amusing commentary.

I kinda get a chuckle when people complain about country songs crossing over to the pop charts. The list above is just a few of the many crossed over during the 1950’s and 1960’s, granted these crossed over in their original form, not the augmented versions that cross over today.

CRAP! I forgot I was on central time … stupid work keeping me over so I had no chance to post any responses. If nothing else, at least I posted that when the responses were still hidden. Oh well.
No worries, Stephen, I’ll factor your score in!
Quiz Idea: Artist’s real name vs. stage names (i.e. Christina Ciminella = Wynonna Judd) I don’t know, maybe this has been done before.
Pselby stay back, I may win something for once (just kidding).
I’m actually really dissapointed that I couldn’t remember “I Love a Rainy Night” by Eddie Rabbit, so dissapointed in my self.
Another quiz idea..you give the lyrics, the dcade and male/female/group, we have to name the song. This could be amde real hard or real easy. It’s my idea, so I’ll even volunteer to disqualify myself for a week and write it.
I, for one (apparently!), really liked this week’s quiz. It gave me a reason to look over the other answers and identify ones I missed (and shouldn’t have: hello “when she cries,” “who says you can’t go home” and “deep river woman”). As well, after a quick glance just now, I don’t recall that anyone mentioned “You and I” by Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle.
Having said that, it is very subjective. I didn’t include Jessica Simpson’s “Come On Over” because I didn’t feel it qualified as a “success” in country music, and with the exception of one peron, who miraculously remembers peak chart positions for both Hot 100 and Hot Country, it was a task guessing whether they were genuinely crossover hits, or just really really popular country songs (i.e. Martina’s “I Love You”).
I do remember hearing the Martina song on pop radio stations back in the day. Wasn’t it on a movie soundtrack though?
You’re right on both counts, but the first point underscores the subjectivity issue.
Does a #24 Hot 100 peak qualify as a mainstream success? And was this before or after the chart began reflecting country airplay?
