Wouldn’t selling or even giving away the originals turn my hard drive copies in to illegal pirates since I would no longer be the owner of the purchased music?

My understanding is that this is correct. If not technically illegal (which I think it is), it certainly seems ethically dubious. If I were going to sell off my CDs, I would also delete the music files I’ve ripped from them.

No, because you owned the originals at the time you ripped them to your hard drive.

My CDs mostly collect dust as well, since going all-digital. I actually sold a few of them on Amazon. Some of the older, out-of-print CDs go for for $50 or more. Others, of course, go literally for pennies. Still, it’s worth going through your collection to see what you can cash in.

Well, if you had gone the whole Digital route with Itunes or Zune, than you really could have given away your entire CD collection if you wanted to. ;)

Makes me wonder what is in your CD collection though.

I fell for this too! The only thing is that I’ve actually been considering something along this line for awhile now, as my physical CDs just collect dust at this point since I’ve gone digital. I haven’t actually brought myself to do it yet though.
