iPod Check: Most Played Song by Twenty Country Artists

Since bringing back Recommend a Track proved so popular, I’m resurrecting another CU oldie but goodie: the iPod check.

I’ve only recently discovered the Most Played feature on iTunes, since it never had any relevance until iPods were large enough in memory to sync all of my music.   So going back to early 2011, I have a lengthy list of the songs I’ve played the most.

So today’s iP0d check:  List your most-played song from twenty different country artists.

You can access this info by going to your own Most Played list and adjusting the number of songs on it – I use 500 for mine – or you can just go to Music and sort by number of plays.  Or you can just pick twenty artists at random and list your most played song for each.  We’re easy here.  (This would also work in Spotify, from what I hear.)

Here’s my top twenty:

  1. Pam Tillis – Deep Down (89 plays)
  2. Keith Urban – I Told You So (81)
  3. Dixie Chicks – Long Time Gone (71)
  4. Taylor Swift – Mean (68)
  5. Trisha Yearwood – Where Are You Now (63)
  6. Patty Loveless – You Can Feel Bad (59)
  7. Emmylou Harris – Easy From Now On (55)
  8. Carrie Underwood – Undo It (50)
  9. Lori McKenna – Lorraine (50)
  10. Dwight Yoakam – Ain’t That Lonely Yet (46)
  11. Sara Evans – Rocking Horse (45)
  12. Sawyer Brown – Cafe on the Corner (45)
  13. Reba McEntire – The Fear of Being Alone (44)
  14. Shania Twain – Up! (43)
  15. Faith

    Hill – Stealing Kisses (41)

  16. Alan Jackson – So You Don’t Have to Love Me Anymore (40)
  17. Crystal Gayle – Why Have Your Left the One You Left Me For (39)
  18. George Strait – Meanwhile (39)
  19. Lee Ann Womack – I May Hate Myself in the Morning (39)
  20. Aaron Tippin – Whole Lotta Love on the Line (38)

I’m surprised that some of my most played artists overall, like Dolly Parton, Randy Travis, and Tim McGraw, don’t have that one big song that I play excessively.  Also, at least half of the songs above aren’t what I would call my favorite song by the given artist.  How about you?

  11. I’m not quite sure how to adapt this to my own listening habits, but I’ll do my best. My iTunes has largely yielded place to Spotify over the past six months or so, and I don’t know where I can find a most-played Spotify list long enough to represent twenty different country artists. The most I could get was twelve.

    1. Dan Seals – “Bop” (I hate how much I love this – I’m blaming My Kind of Country for its recent re-entry into heavy rotation)
    2. Toby Keith – “I Like Girls That Drink Beer”
    3. Anne Murray – “Walk Right Back”
    4. Emmylou Harris – “High Powered Love”
    5. Roba Stanley – “Single Life”
    6. Suzy Bogguss – “Give Me Some Wheels”
    7. Old Crow Medicine Show – “Levi”
    8. Bonnie Guitar – “A Woman In Love”
    9. Kathy Mattea – “Gimme Shelter”
    10. Kasey Chambers – “Once In a While”
    11. Teea Goans – “Misty Blue”
    12. Lee Ann Womack – “Does My Ring Burn Your Finger”

I would have thought that Dolly Parton’s “Shattered Image,” Bob Wills’ “New San Antonio Rose,” Randy Travis’ “Forever And Ever, Amen,” and some George Strait, and Carlene Carter would have made the list, but they did not. Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams, Shania Twain, Alison Krauss, and Rodney Crowell made the Top Artists list, but not the Top Songs list.

The iTunes data is as follows, but it’s not very well reflective of my recent listening habits. Several of these songs I haven’t played on iTunes in months.

    1. Shania Twain – “Up!” (56 plays)
    2. Emmylou Harris – “If I Could Only Win Your Love” (43 plays)
    3. Wynonna – “Love It Out Loud” (38 plays)
    4. Reba McEntire – “One Last Good Hand” (35 plays)
    5. Sara Evans – “If You Ever Want My Lovin'” (32 plays)
    6. Pam Tillis – “It’s Lonely Out There” (29 plays)
    7. Faith Hill – “This Kiss” (25 plays)
    8. Jo Dee Messina – “I’m Done” (25 plays)
    9. Julie Reeves – “Trouble Is a Woman” (25 plays)
    10. Wanda Jackson – “In the Middle of a Heartache” (24 plays)
    11. Dixie Chicks – “Heartbreak Town” (23 plays)
    12. Alison Krauss – “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You” (22 plays)
    13. LeAnn Rimes – “Honestly” (22 plays)
    14. Taylor Swift – “Mean” (22 plays)
    15. Gretchen Wilson – “Work Hard, Play Harder” (20 plays)
    16. Patty Loveless – “Chains” (20 plays)
    17. Sugarland – “Stuck Like Glue” (20 plays)
    18. Trisha Yearwood – “Wrong Side of Memphis” (20 plays)
    19. Dolly Parton – “I Will Always Love You” (19 plays)
    20. Gene Watson & Rhonda Vincent – “Your Money & My Good Looks” (19 plays)

  13. As Kevin kinda said, this doesn’t fully capture my country music tastes. If I had my iPod 5 or 10 years ago, I’m sure Josh Gracin, Jason Aldean, and Dierks Bentley would have much more prominence here, and “Good Girl” probably wouldn’t be my most listened to Carrie song. And can you tell I don’t listen to country much on my iPod?

    01. Carrie Underwood – Good Girl – 73
    02. Hunter Hayes – Storm Warning – 44
    03. The Band Perry – You Lie – 18

  14. I recently transferred all of my music to a new laptop, so my play counts are rather low. The list also skews a bit newer, since I listen to the more recently purchased most.

For grins and giggles, here’s the final five:

    21. Ashton Shepherd – “I’m Good” (4)
    22. The Band Perry – “You Lie” (4)
    23. The Band Perry – “All Your Life” (4)
    24. The Band Perry – “Independence” (4)
    25. Carrie Underwood – “Songs Like This” (4)

This seems about right based on the perceptions I have regarding my listening habits. Had no idea, though, I’d listened to “Postcards From Paris” so frequently, as “Hypnotize The Moon” has been my #1 most played song for forever.

Kind of shocking my admiration for Miranda Lambert isn’t displayed here, but most of my Lambert listenings take place while driving around. Would’ve thought “Takin’ Pills” would’ve ranked high, but that was mostly car play as well.

Overall this is very accurate of my listening habits. And it looks like, I enjoy some great selections.

  19. I’ve used several different players since 2008 but they all synced up to last.fm, so these numbers go back nearly 4 years. I don’t many different artists this high up the song plays list either.

    1. Trisha Yearwood – They Call It Falling For a Reason (73)
    2. Reba McEntire – Sweet Music Man (70)

  20. Recommend a track and ipod check should be repeated at least every 6 months. I enjoy seeing what other commenters like and listen to the most and occasionally find what to me is a great song that I might not have found otherwise. I’ve played the Eli Yound Band’s “War on a Desperate Man” 11 times since someone mentioned it on the recommend post last week.

  21. I’ve had to reset iTunes a couple times, so here are my numbers from Last.fm. See if you can detect a pattern here:

  23. Okay, here goes. Like most everyone else, my music-listening is scattered amongst a few different services, but here’s my Zune top 20 artists list:

It should also be said that this is a true “most-played song from twenty different country artists” list. I had to ignore several repeats from favorite artists like George Strait, Reba McEntire, Collin Raye, and Chris Young. I also think that this list, being heavy on 90s country music, is very representative of my listening tastes.

I also thought that this was a very interesting self-exploration exercise. It’s interesting to see what songs I turn to in various situations, and, as I’m a single college student, how many of these situations turn on love, especially for my very top tracks. I really appreciate this post, not only for the neat music suggestions, but also for the opportunity to reflect on myself.

  24. My numbers aren’t very high because I do most of my listening on my iPod at the gym, I rarely listen to an entire song in my iTunes library before moving onto the next one (my overall most played song out of all 16,000 only has 14 plays) and I’ve only had my computer for a couple of years. I did come across a few surprises though.
