Review: Sunny Sweeney, “If I Could”

Sunny Sweeney, “If I Could”

I don’t know who she is, but I want the whole album. I haven’t heard anything quite like this before, traditional country thrown in a blender with Alvin & The Chipmunks and Maria McKee. If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like to play the Dixie Chicks album Home at 45 rpm speed, click through to listen to this one.

For sheer originality, Sweeney gets bonus points from me.

  1. I remember reading about her a few months ago when she signed on with Big Machine Records. Some people in Austin thought it was a big deal that a local girl got a label like BMR to pick her up. I haven’t listened to any of her stuff to see if the hype is worth it or not.

  2. If you recall, HEARTBREAKERS HALL OF FAME was #10 on my list of the best CDs of 2007. Slowly, she is being discovered

  3. she’s very reminiscent of Kasey Chambers…the rest of the album is pretty similar to this, overtly traditional and kind of stuck in the honky-tonk past but still very listenable and promising. the girl’s got real songwriting talent too — “Slow Swinging Western Tunes” is one of two on the album she composed solely and it’s a stone-cold stunner.

  4. I Love the whole album especially Lavender Blue, this song is an amazing little song that should have been played more on the radio. A-
