  1. I like a lot of your choices Blake, I think in a lot of ways we have similar taste as well. It’s especially gratifying that both you and Leeann put Patty’s Sleepless Nights so high in your top five.

I finally heard the Jamey Johnson album, (My brother gave it to me for Christmas) and now I see what all the fuss is about. You folks were so right about this great record. He reminds me a lot of Kris Kristofferson, and Merle and Johnny Cash as well. A worthy heir to be sure. JJ’s album is both refreshingly fresh and richly reminiscent at the same time. No fiddle though, I guess that’s a stylistic choice, but some amazing steel work on this album. And I think his twang works just fine. Some great lyrics and memorable lines…Yeah, this album is like a movie.

Now I have three of the five Grammy nominated albums. While I still strongly support Patty’s Sleepless Nights to win, if JJ’s “That Lonesome Song” or Trisha’s HH&TPOL win instead, I will certainly not consider it an outrage. But Go PL and SN!

And I believe it was based on your recommendation that I asked for Coal for Christmas, and I got my wish! Same league as Mountain Soul, and almost as good. I love this album. I had some doubts about Kathy’s folk-sounding voice (as beautiful as it is) applied to Mountain music, but her WV roots really shine through. She more than pulls it off! And Kathy does a great job on “Harlan” as well, though I like Patty’s version better and feel it’s a lot more convincing. I think my favorites from “Coal” are Blue Diamond Mines and Coal Tattoo. I love Marty Stuart’s influence on this project…what a great and talented team!

Thank you Blake, for all the great leads, and for your thoughtful and thought provoking lists and write-ups!
