Review: Van Zant, “That Scares Me”

Van Zant, “That Scares Me”

A theme that’s been explored before. The protagonist compares how fearless he was in his youth, but that his children following that example terrifies him. It reminded me of the Gary Allan hit “Tough Little Boys” and the new Pam Tillis & John Anderson duet “Life Has Sure Changed Us Around.” It’s decently written and performed, but lacks the edge I would expect, given the wild history the singer is claiming in the lyric.

Grade: B

  1. What i like about van zant is they sing about what they know and it comes off as very real and genuine. Liked the last album and it looks like more of the same is on the way.

  2. Everything VanZant has done is beyond excellent; they sing from the heart. The words to this song almost made me cry; I have a 17 year old son and it seemed as though they were singing to me.

  3. Once again the brothers reached a level few “artists” can hope to. I think of a movie about a musician who was TRUE to his music, and he told a young hopeful that…..once he was in the desert alone and he heard the silence….and that it was the most beautiful sound he had ever heard. Silence in the Desert. Once you touch music like that, you are never the same. I am afraid that country music of today is not capable of appreciating this level of talent. Beer Goggles and Bedonkidonk butts sell country these days, and that is too bad…. we have before us true legends in the Van Zants, and I am grateful that they do not lower themselves for record sales. Silence in the desert boys……Rock On!

  4. I have an 8 yr old son and I feel exactly the same way about my relationship with him as Johnny does in his lyrics to this song

Jeez, I have a lump in my throat as I’m typing. Can’t wait for the album based upon this

  5. I heard this song for the first time today and stopped in my tracks. They know how to lay it out. I immediatley called my best friend and said have you heard the new VanZant song it just made me cry.

  6. Wow….another winner for the VZ boys.

They have really re-invented themselves from their first two albums together….Get Right With The Man and now this new one will prove them to be big players on the country scene.

  7. Once I had a fortune ridin’ on the shoe
Of a field goal kicker from LSU
    I never broke a sweat
Hell, it was just a bet

    2nd Verse

Now, I’ve climbed mountains and jumped from planes
Even played chicken with a couple trains
    Lord, I’ve been a fool
    I still a’kept my cool

    Pre Chorus

I don’t mind admittin’ this heart ‘a mine
    Starts to pound a’thinkin’ ’bout

    1st Chorus

The day my son starts askin’ me
    All about my history
The things I don’t want him to know
The sex, the drugs, and rock-n-roll
Or the first time I watched my daughter
Climb in some boy’s car as I holler,
    ‘Honey, don’t be late’
I swallow hard while they drive away
How sad my life without my wife would be
    Now that scares me

    3rd Verse

This mornin’ while I combed my hair
I found a few stray grays in there
    And I laughed out loud
    I guess I ain’t that proud

    4th Verse

Some people are afraid to die
But me and Jesus get along all right
I’ll be okay ’cause my judgment day
    Will be

    2nd Chorus

The day my son starts askin’ me
    All about my history
The things I don’t want him to know
The sex, the drugs, and rock-n-roll
On the night I walked my daughter
Down the aisle in a stiff white collar
    Just a view, they’ll say
But who gives this girl away
And leave her standin’ while I find my seat
    Now that scares me

    Tag Chorus

The things I don’t want them to know
The sex, the drugs, and rock-n-roll
And the day they call another house their home
I’m hopin’ they find everything that they need
How sad my life without my wife would be
    Now that scares me
    Oh, that scares me

  8. love the new single. i have a boy and a girl 15 and 12, i couldnt have wrote this song any better. this touches my heart deepy, kinda like ” momma i dont want to say goodbye” by skynyrd. great band , keep doing what your doing

  9. This is an excellent song, I enjoyed it all the way through. It’s too bad radio didn’t play it much, this song really nails it. The lyrics are amazing and sung nicely as well. This is so much better than a lot of songs that are coming out by A-list artists, and sadly gets hardly any airplay.

  10. hey roger…. Ronald Wayne “Ronnie” Van Zant (January 15, 1948 – October 20, 1977) was the lead vocalist, primary lyricist, and a founding member of the Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was the older brother of .38 Special founder and vocalist Donnie Van Zant and current Lynyrd Skynyrd lead vocalist Johnny Van Zant.(wikipedia) … so it’s funny that you mentioned skynard, like they were in no way related
