Every No. 1 Single of the Seventies: Loretta Lynn, “Love is the Foundation”

Loretta Lynn does just fine with a right down the middle love ballad.

You can tell from the jump that she didn’t write it. Not so much because of the substance of the song, which is the kind of love song that she didn’t write very often. It’s more because of the way the melody doesn’t quite fit her voice, and she has to elongate some of the vowels to make it work for her.

She was a great stylist, so she’s able to make it work. I just wish there was a little bit more song here to work with.  Without a second verse or a bridge, the song is over before it really begins.

It’s good, but it’s certainly not foundational in the Lynn catalog.

“Love is the Foundation” gets a B.
