Every No. 1 Single of the Seventies: Jerry Reed, “Lord Mr. Ford”

“‘Lord Mr. Ford”

Jerry Reed

Written by Deena Kay Rose

Billboard

#1 (1 week)

August 4, 1973

Perhaps the most impressive thing about this record is how well songwriter Deena Kay Rose replicated the unique voice of Jerry Reed so well that you’d think he wrote this one.

Reed sings this withering criticism of the automobile with his trademark wit, with his peerless ability to deliver sophisticated lyrics in a folksy, homespun manner making it accessible to listeners without talking down to them.

It’s not quite as clever as his self-penned hits, but it has an annoyingly timeless message that still connects half a century later, as we navigate high gas prices and software bugs in our needlessly complicated modern vehicles.

“Lord Mr. Ford” gets a B+.
