Single Review: Jake Hoot and Kelly Clarkson, “I Would Have Loved You”

“I Would Have Loved You”

Jake Hoot and Kelly Clarkson

Written by Jamie Floyd, Jake Hoot, and Dean Sams

Jake Hoot is from Cookeville TN, and won Season 17 of The Voice.  He’s teamed up with his coach, Kelly Clarkson, on this winning new duet.

The song begins with a nice piano that sets the stage. Jake has a wonderful voice, even if lyrically, his part here is a bit vague. He begins with talking about how the girl in the song “made him feel this way” and “There’s nothing you can do to change it. ” The chorus leads you to believe that he is going to tell her how much he loves her, but it takes a twist:  “I’m gonna hate you for as long as I would have loved you.”

Kelly’s part brings another perspective. In her view, she gave someone all of her, and he threw it all away for a night with another person she calls “some nobody.”  When it comes to her, nothing is temporary.

Kelly and Jake sound great together, with their voices blending really well.  However, this song might have made more sense as a solo effort, rather than a duet.  But it is well written, and concludes with some powerful vocals from both singers that make the duet approach pay off.
