There’s something oddly appropriate about the music video for this song being Keith Urban pretending to drive in front of a green screen.
Just like he never hits the road in the clip, he never gets around to making a point on “Days Go By” that’s any deeper than its title.
The production does all of the work here, breezing along with a catchy frothiness that keeps things moving fast enough to gloss over the song’s complete lack of substance. Things get as deep as days going by like cars go by, a comparison made over and over again throughout the song.
No wrestling with mortality like on Kathy Mattea’s “Time Passes By.” No social commentary like on Alabama’s “I’m in a Hurry (and Don’t Know Why.)” Not even an engagement with an alternative to this fast-paced life, like on Tim McGraw’s “Where the Green Grass Grows.”
Just cars going fast and hey, isn’t that just like life?
Sure sounds great on the radio, though, even if it isn’t too distinguishable from the commercial jingles played around it.
“Days Go By” gets a B-.
