It remains impressive that Freddie Hart strung together six consecutive number one hits with a throwback sound that was out of step with the compelling stylists that were dominating the radio at the time.
This one holds up better than most of those hits, with a more restrained and, in turn, effective vocal performance that doesn’t oversell the song’s central hook: I took a trip to Heaven and I didn’t even have to die!
Hart’s sincerity is palpable, and you can’t help but be happy for him and wish him well on his trip.
It’s a shame these records remain unavailable to modern listeners. Here’s hoping the catalog gods address that soon.
“Trip to Heaven” gets a B+.
