Review: Rick Trevino, “Separate Ways”

Trevino had some success with radio-friendly fluff like “Running Out of Reasons to Run” and “Bobbie Ann Mason” in the mid-nineties. He’s back with a fantastic single about divorce: “The last thing that they ever did together was go their separate ways.” It’s got me thinking that the labels who signed all those young hat acts did them a huge disservice, putting a huge marketing push behind them when the artists hadn’t fully matured yet. It’s a shame that Trevino is putting out much better music now that there’s a far less chance that it will be heard. Hopefully Warner will give it the huge push it deserves.

Seek this one out. It’s worth your time and money.

  1. This is a hugely powerful song. I hope it gets the radio play it deserves – but something tells me that this song maybe too mature for country radio.

  2. I have a friend going thru a break-up right now and this song holds a lot of meaning for her and for me. She is struggling with wether or not she has given the realationship every chance. And it has gone from Great to good to bad too. Thanks Rick for a great song.

  3. A great song. I’m glad to see that he seems to have left behind a lot of that contrived voice cracking that he once had. I much prefer this powerful performance.

  4. I’ve just recently bought this because of this review (thanks Kevin). I’ve never been a fan of Rick’s older material but this was amazing. I’ll never understand why amazing songs like this fail on country radio while worst songs shoot straight to the top (Shiftwork). This is possibly the best overlooked single from last year.
