Daily Top Five: Favorite Quirky Love Songs

A tender love ballad is always nice, but it’s sometimes those weird love songs  that make you laugh or even creep you out a little (I’m looking at you Sara Watkins and Fiona Apple!) that are most memorable.

What are some of your favorite quirky love songs?

  1. Mac Davis, “Most of All”
  2. Kasey Chambers, “The Stupid Things I Do”
  3. Sara Watkins & Fiona Apple, “You’re the One I Love”
  4. Vince Gill & Dolly Parton, “Pretty Flowers”
  5. John Prine & Iris Dement, “In Spite of Ourselves”

  1. I’d like to hear that Prine song by a better vocalist. I’d play it for my sister-in-law who always smothers her scrambled eggs in ketchup. I realize that’s only a small part of the song’s weirdness.

I only can think of two others for now:
Tift Merritt – Good Hearted Man
Band Perry – Hip to My Heart

  2. This is a good one!

    I Don’t Love You Much Do I – Guy Clark & Emmylou
    Girl Downtown – Hayes Carll
Weed Instead of Roses – Ashley Monroe

and, for me, the ultimate quirky love song:

I Love Little Baby Ducks – Roger Miller

  3. Hmm . . . I’m not sure these all qualify as love songs, but here’s what I have to contribute:

    Quirky/Creepy Favorites:
    1. Dolly Parton — “Joshua” (Does anyone out there think Joshua might be a pedophile?)
    2. Willie Nelson & Julio Iglesias — “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before”

    Quirky/Funny Favorites:
    3. Loretta Lynn & Conway Twitty — “You’re the Reason Our Kids Our Ugly”
    4. Brad Paisley — “I’m Gonna Miss Her”
    5. Blake Shelton — “Honey Bee”

  4. My five (quirky and, as frequently happens when I post things like this, thinking outside the box):

    1. DIFFERENT DRUM–Linda Ronstadt
    2. TROUBLE OVER ME–Tift Merritt
    3. HI HEEL SNEAKERS–Elvis Presley
    4. THEY CALL IT FALLING FOR A REASON–Trisha Yearwood
    5. WHEN YOU GET A LITTLE LONELY–Nicolette Larson

Of course, everyone’s definition of “quirky” is going to be different.

  5. Sarah Darling – Something to do with your hands.
Lucinda Williams – Still I long for your kiss.
Lucy Angel – I’ll be your whiskey.

  6. Porter & Dolly had a number of odd songs that could be construed as love songs (“Run That By Me One More Time”) but I think the that the ultimate quirky love song was Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn “You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly”

  7. 1. You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly: Conway & Loretta
    2. Text Me You Love Me: Bobby Joe Owens
    3. My Uncle Used To Love Me, But She Died: Roger Miller
    4. One More Last Chance: Vince Gill
5 (A). All You Really Need Is Love: Brad Paisley
    5 (B). I, Love: Tom T. Hall

    Holiday Favorite . . .
    Christmas Cookies: George Strait
