Every No. 1 Single of the Seventies: Lynn Anderson, “You’re My Man”

“You’re My Man”

“Rose Garden” has endured for many reasons, one of them being the delightful contrast between the song’s lyrics and its bouncy singalong melody and bright strings.

The resulting record is a frothy delight that doesn’t have the sophistication or intelligence of “Rose Garden,” but captures Anderson’s effervescent personality perfectly.

“I’m Your Man” is like the Pentecostal revival take on a mournful Tammy Wynette statement of fidelity. For Anderson, it’s a blessing and not a burden to stand by her man, and she’s happy to let him know it.

“You’re My Man” gets a B+.

  1. I love Lynn Anderson and I would love to give it a high grade, but it just simply doesn’t hold a candle to the other songs of this era. I give it a “B-” at best

  2. I mentioned on Rose Garden that I am woefully unfamiliar with Lynn Anderson, so I never have heard this one before. I agree that it’s a delightful listen that is nothing special. Bouncy and fun, but not super deep either.

  3. Another fun, upbeat offering from Lynn Anderson! Something about the melody to this one is just comforting and just makes me smile. And similar to “Rose Garden,” I love the combination of steel guitar, orchestra, and heavy backup vocals all throughout the song. Such an appealing, classy sound. Love Lynn’s warm, enthusiastic vocals, as well.

Her enthusiasm really shows in the video performance featured here, as well. Also love the old fashioned living room setting! It’s so delightfully nostalgic and very cozy looking. :)

  4. There does seem to be something missing from the lyrics and the melody; it seems unresolved as it is recorded. Nonetheless, as has been mentioned, Anderson sounds great. I had never heard this song before.

  5. I give this one an A mainly because of Lynn’s excellent singing and the stunning arrangements that make it sound almost like a Broadway musical number. It became Lynn’s second (and last) top 10 hit on the Billboard easy listening chart.
