Daily Top Five: Better With Time

Willie NelsonAs we grow older, our tastes change and some would even say that they mature. Such is the case with me, as you’ll see in the list below. There was a time when I did not like these artists (gasp!) and a time when I didn’t like these songs. However, something made them grow on me to the point that I absolutely love them now.

Which artists and songs have grown on you over time?

Here are my lists:

Artists:

  1. Willie Nelson
  2. Dwight Yoakam
  3. Emmylou Harris
  4. Miranda Lambert

  1. I love “What Was I Thinking” as a pick. and Dierks is a pick for me overall as well. I think it took me a bit to realize what he was doing.

    5. “Look Heart, No Hands” – Randy Travis

  4. Only one actually comes to my mind here:

    TRISHA YEARWOOD

Truth be told, I really did not think much of her back when she made her debut in 1991 with “She’s In Love With The Boy”; and her close affiliation with Garth Brooks (who had even by that time become kind of tiresome in what I felt was his own shameless self-promotion) was a minus. But by her third album, 1993’s The Song Remembers When, she did strike me as one of the best female artists of the 1990s, regardless of genre.

    The five:

    THE SONG REMEMBERS WHEN
MR. RADIO (a cover of a song that her spiritual role model Linda Ronstadt did in 1982)
TRY ME AGAIN (which Linda actually wrote, back in 1976)
    LOVE LET GO OF ME
THEY CALL IT FALLING FOR A REASON

  5. Quote by Leeann Ward:

    Erik,
Do you think you would have softened toward Yearwood if not for the Ronstadt connections?

To be perfectly honest, I am not sure. I wasn’t even aware of her appreciation for Linda until The Song Remembers When. I probably would have, but honestly I don’t know.

  6. Artists:
    1. Dixie Chicks
    2. Dierks Bentley
    3. Toby Keith
    4. Gary Allan
    5. Dwight Yoakam

    Songs:
    1. Travelin’ Soldier – Dixie Chicks
    2. She’s Not the Cheatin’ Kind – Brooks & Dunn
    3. Strawberry Wine – Deana Carter
    4. Better as a Memory – Kenny Chesney
    5. Neon Light – Blake Shelton

  7. When I first got interested in country music in my teens (in the 90s), I simply did not like or understand the appeal of Dwight Yoakam. (Maybe it had something to do with my mom being a fan). I eventually came to my senses and he is now one of my favourites of all time (top 5 for sure).
